Draped Bust Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 328
1796 S-97 R3 Draped Bust. VF-20. Sharpness EF40 with extremely faint granularity covering the obverse and slightly stronger granularity covering the reverse. In addition, there is some stronger planchet erosion at the T in LIBERTY and at the dentils over NIT. No verdigris or contact marks. The eye appeal is decent in spite of the imperfect surfaces, especially on the obverse where the roughness is so fine it makes the surfaces satiny under a slightly glossy under the light olive brown patina. MDS, Breen state IV.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

1797 NC-5 R6. About Good-3. Sharpness VG8 or so, perhaps even better on the reverse, but the rims were tapped all the way around, then flattened creating very wide rims that impinge on the legends and base of the date. Fortunately everything remains easily readable, only RTY offering a bit of a challenge. The surfaces are dull thanks to uniform fine granularity and there is a shallow dent on the eye. Dark reddish chocolate brown. In spite of all this joy, the details are relatively clear, especially on the reverse, and the attribution points are clear. A scudzy piece for sure, but you may not get another chance at this variety.

1798 S-148 R2. VF-20 Plus. Style I Hair with Large 8. Attractive glossy chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, only light contact marks consistent with the grade. The only notable mark is a diagonal nick in the hair at the forehead. E-MDS, Breen state III. Called VF25 and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, his photo #36614. The eye appeal is quite nice and this cent may well deserve the full VF25 grade assigned in the condition census. In addition, the reverse is slightly misaligned to K-3 while the obverse is nicely centered on the planchet.

1798/7 S-151 R3 Overdate 8 over 7. VF-20. Ten points sharper with two parallel horizontal scratches from the mouth to the rim at right. The surfaces are mostly smooth, but a strong glass reveals some very faint roughness in the fields and protected areas, especially in the field under the hair ribbon and at RICA. Glossy light olive and reddish chocolate brown. M-LDS, Breen state VI. The edge displays traces of diagonal reeding, an abnormal planchet edge described by Breen on a few varieties of early large cents. The date and legends are bold and the overdate feature is obvious. Called VF20 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF25 net F12 and tied for CC#8, his photo #28626. Comes with a long provenance that includes several prominent cent specialists.
